Counting Activities for Preschoolers

Counting begins with small groups and plenty of time to notice. These activities give children aged 3–5 a chance to match one number word to one object, recognise a small group and talk about what changes when an object is added. A parent or carer can read the prompts and join in.

Start with one, two and three

Put one object in front of your child, then add another. Count slowly, pointing to or moving each object once. With three objects, try arranging them in a row and then in a triangle. Count each arrangement together. The goal is a shared discovery, not a quick answer.

Move towards five and eight

When a smaller group feels comfortable, add one object and ask what changed. Use five fingers on one hand to match five toys or blocks. For eight, try a group of five beside a group of three. Count the whole group before discussing the smaller groups. Repeat or return to three whenever your child wants.

Bimble’s picnic asks children to count a small group of berries and choose its number. Count the stars offers another way to match a visible group to a number. There are no timers or scores; a grown-up can read the question aloud. Take one round at a time and leave room for another look.

A five-minute activity away from the screen

Collect five blocks, spoons or other familiar objects. Invite your child to put one beside each finger on a drawn hand. Count together, then remove one object and count again. Let your child choose the objects and ask their own questions. Use larger objects that are suitable for your child.

Questions to ask together

How many are here? What happens if we add one? Can you make another group with the same number? Ask one question, wait for a response and explore it together. Children may point, move an object or say a number; each can help the conversation continue.
