Letter Sound Activities for Preschoolers
Letters have names, and words begin with sounds. A gentle first activity is to listen to the beginning of familiar words together. Wonder Hollow’s Find the S sound game gives parents and children aged 3–5 a shared prompt for noticing those sounds.

Listen before choosing
Say snake, moon and apple together. Stretch the beginning of snake into sssss and ask which word starts with that sound. Your child can listen, point or repeat the word. Leave time for a guess, and say the words again if needed. You do not need to introduce many sounds at once.
Use familiar examples
Start with words your child already knows. Sun, sock and snake share an initial s sound. Moon begins with m; tree begins with t. Describe what you hear at the beginning rather than asking your child to memorise a spelling rule. If an example is unfamiliar, find a familiar object instead.
Play Find the S sound
The free homepage game presents a letter, a sound prompt and word choices. A parent or carer reads the words aloud; the game does not provide spoken audio. Later rounds explore m and t too. There is no timer. If your child chooses another word, look and listen together before trying again.
Try an offline sound hunt
Choose one sound and look for familiar objects around the room. For s, you might find a sock or a spoon. Say each word clearly and compare its beginning with a word such as moon. Keep it playful: your child can suggest an object, invent a silly sentence or decide to finish.
Keep the conversation gentle
Try a few words rather than a long list. A short shared activity is enough for today, and you can revisit a sound another time. Wonder Hollow’s letter-sound stories are linked in the homepage catalogue. Pick one together and pause when a character asks a question.
