Preschool learning, one little discovery at a time
Wonder Hollow offers gentle learning videos and free browser games for children aged 3–5. Mossy the koala, Tilly the quokka, Rufus the kookaburra and Bimble the bilby explore one idea at a time. This guide is for parents and carers choosing an activity to share.
Try the free learning games or watch Wonder Hollow on YouTube. There are no timers or scores in the games. A grown-up can read the prompts aloud.
Explore our practical guides: counting activities, first letter sounds and preschool science.
Counting and early numbers
Start with a small group of objects and count each one once. Our number episodes explore counting to three, five, eight and ten. In Bimble’s picnic and Count the stars, children match a small group to a number or count the stars they see.
For example, Counting to 8 is a counting song about six, seven and eight. Afterwards, count eight blocks or spoons together, moving each object as you say its number.
Phonics and first letter sounds
Our letter-sound stories explore sounds such as S, A and T. The Find the S sound game lets you choose which word starts with a sound. Say the words together and listen for the first sound, leaving time for your child to answer.
Simple science and the natural world
Explore floating and sinking, light and shadow, day and night, animal homes and how baby animals grow. Float or Sink at the Water Log introduces floating and sinking; the Will it float? game invites children to make a prediction.
Keep the conversation going away from the screen: look for shadows together or notice plants and animals on a walk. Ask what your child notices before offering an explanation.
Feelings, bravery and taking a breath
Our feelings stories explore happy and sad faces, feeling cross and being brave. In The Big Breath, the idea is that feeling cross is allowed and a big breath can help it pass. Invite your child to talk about the story without asking them to give a right answer about their own feelings.
Places, languages and long ago
Other stories explore families with two homes, words in different languages, the Moon landing and how life was different when grandparents were little. The website’s games introduce Australia and France and putting a growing story in order.
How to watch and play together
- Choose one topic your child is curious about.
- Watch or play together. Read a game prompt aloud, or pause a video when a character asks a question.
- Leave room for an answer, a guess or a question. There is no need to finish an activity.
- Try one related activity away from the screen. Episode descriptions include an offline idea.
